During my junior winter term, I went to Costa Rica (and then Little Cayman) to conduct research in tropical ecology through a Dartmouth foreign studies program. Professors, teaching assistants, other students, and I traveled to seven research stations throughout the country, where we were exposed to vastly different climates and ecosystems. Working with teaching staff and other students, I had the special opportunity to immerse myself in systems unique to the tropics, from community structures in the water tanks of bromeliad plants in a montane cloud forest to thermoregulation of a tenting white bat in a rainforest.
